How to Make A Mousetrap Car HST Physics Project

mousetrap car design

The mousetrap bar, travels through an arc of around 180 degrees and that motion has to be applied and used to move the car’s axle or wheels. If you do not want to do all this or in short start from scratch, these days you even get ready-made kits where you just have to assemble the car. There would be instructions given, so you need not think about scary things, like torsion, friction, torque, and so on! Now, let’s move on to actually making it and see how to build a mouse trap car. Axle – shaft is attached to the wheels though the hubs it should be straight as possible or the wheels will wobble.

Step 9: The Science and Math of the Mousetrap Car

I have cut mine to 9 inches but you can change this variable to net different results from the car. If you are using the adapter I suggest filling with a little hot glue. When we first received 3D printers I was very excited to develop new curriculum for my courses.

Mouse Trap Vehicle

The first step in deceasing friction happens in the planning of your mousetrap vehicle. As you plan your project think about all the points of friction that your design will have and then look for ways to decrease the points of friction. Because the number of moving components increases the friction point look for ways to simplify the design as much as possible. Using a lot of gears and pulleys may be a great way to change the pulling the torque but this will also lead to more points of friction that will have to be address, look for simplicity. Mechanical advantage is the ratio of output force to input force which is a tradeoff between distance moved and the amount of force. Move farther out on input side of the lever and output side moves shorter distance but with more force.

Follow these design principles to create a winning mousetrap powered car design.

You might remember from high-school learning the principles of basic physics and then making a car like this yourself. Rober shows you how to win the mousetrap challenge as well as carefully explaining the principles behind it. Fit two small wheels onto the ends of the dowel; wrap the ends of the dowel in tape if the wheels are slipping off. If the wheels fit loosely, then wrap one layer of of masking tape around the end of the dowel before putting the wheels on (picture 2).

Mousetrap Cars: Build a Distance Traveler

In case this intrigues you, the text below would probably quench your thirst of knowledge about mouse trap cars. Friction is a force that acts against the motion of all moving objects. As a general rule of thumb the more moving parts a device has the greater the force of friction acting against the system. The first step in deceasing friction happens in the planning and designing of your mousetrap vehicle.

Making the Wheels and Chassis

If you are building a super-fast speed-trap racer then rotational inertial is one of the most important concepts you will need to understand. Because most top-speed contest are performed over a set distance friction is not as big of an issue as it would be in a maximum travel-distance contest. Non-drive wheels should be as small and as light as possible.

Step 5: Preparing the Wheels

They can alter the "arm" of the car, which in this case is the dowel, or they may want to use other techniques to improve their cars abilities. I thought helping the twins with math would be my downfall, but you guys, 8th-grade science! Last week the kids came home with a project for their science classes. Their project (whether they wanted to do it or not) was to build a mousetrap car that could travel over 4 meters. You can check out the Guinness Book of World Records website to see who holds the record for the fastest mousetrap car. You may also be able to find some clubs for people interested in building their cars or driving them, depending on where you live.

Changing the length of the lever arm does not change the total energy and/or the torque produced by the mouse trap but it does change the pulling force applied to the drive axle. Longer lever arms will have less pulling force than shorter lever arm but longer lever arm will pull more string from the drive axle than shorter lever arm. Changing and/or attaching a lever arm to the mousetrap is the number one way to control a mousetrap vehicles performance.

I will try to present this in a fun an easy to understand manner. In looking at the labs schools are doing with mousetrap cars it appears to be related with recording total distance and/or computing the acceleration during the run. A background in force and motion will be helpful which will include a discussion of Newton’s Laws.

I don’t pretend to play one online, I’m just a parent who was trying to help my kids with their project and this is what worked for us. If you have suggestions for readers on how to make the car even better I would love for you to share those in the comments. Leave links to your own mousetrap car projects that worked too because being parents is a team effort. In conclusion, mousetrap cars are a great way to entertain yourself for free. You can even enter your car into racing competitions if you enjoy it.

In the mousetrap car one axle acts like a pulley as the string is wrapped around it. The diameter of axle in relation to the diameter of the driving wheels is the mechanical advantage. During the first few years of working with my science related project ideas it was mainly about just getting the students to successfully build and operate the projects. Through workshops I have taught a fairly large number of mousetrap cars of my design have been built.

Cut four wheels out of a piece of foam board or corrugated cardboard (adult supervision is necessary). Typically for any given mousetrap project, you’ll either be supplied with a list of allowed materials, or you’ll have to set out and find them yourselves. Here’s a list of materials that are generally good to have on hand for the project if you do get the choice.

I have learned much from this and have tried to improve on some aspects of my design. These mousetrap cars have also been built without my help in all parts of the globe. A set mousetrap is full of potential energy which, when released, is converted to kinetic (motion) energy. The design of your car allowed that energy to be transferred to the axle to make the wheels turn. As the string was pulled, friction between it and the axle caused the axle to rotate, spinning the wheels and moving the car forward.

Traction is a major issue when it comes to building a super fast speed-trap racer. If there is not enough traction between the drive wheels and the floor then your mousetrap racer will not be able to accelerate as designed. Use drive wheels that provide a lot of traction on the floor. Heat and sound are forms of friction that will eventually absorbs all the energy from your mousetrap racer and cause it to come to rest.

When you step on the platform of the trap, it releases the bar, which holds down one or more wheels. These wheels are affixed to axles that are connected to the mousetraps. They run along a track made out of duct tape, letting it go forward. The Mousetrap Car is a toy car that can be made from household items. It is powered by the force of gravity and the weight of the mouse trap.
