Charles of Bourbon, the last of the line, died in 1527; another branch of the family was ruling the duchy of Vendôeme. This family became lords of Navarre, a small kingdom on France's southern border with Spain, in 1555. In the meantime, the Protestant revolt against the Catholic doctrine and hierarchy was driving France to a full-scale civil war. To make peace with the Huguenots (Protestants) of France, Catherine de Médicis, the mother of the French king, arranged a marriage of her daughter Margaret to Henry, the Bourbon and Protestant prince of Navarre.

Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
The genetic identifications of both putative samples of two kings of France were only validated by the similarity of a limited number of Y-STRs based on clearly degraded DNA. The aim of our study was to attempt to reconstruct the true Y-chromosomal variant of the genealogical lineage of the House of Bourbon from which these French kings originated. Early Bourbons in France
Antoine de Bourbon, his father, was a ninth-generation descendant of King Louis IX of France.[2] Jeanne d'Albret, his mother, was the Queen of Navarre and niece of King Francis I of France. The accession of the duc d’Anjou to Spain would never have been secured without the resolute support of his grandfather, the French king.
